This is a hard candy that melts in your mouth and has a wonderful range of flavors. Thanks so much to Mrs. Krech for sharing this wonderful recipe. This is perfect for a bake sale or just as a treat to give to friends and family. This recipe can easily be made vegan by substituting earth balance vegan spread for the butter and using vegan gram crackers.
-8 to 12 Gram Crackers (Or however many it takes to fill your 9 by 13-inch tray)
-3/4 cup of Brown sugar
-3/4 cup of Butter
-1/4 teaspoon of Salt (If you used unsalted butter)
-1 Teaspoon of Vanilla
-1 Cup of Dark or Bittersweet Chocolate Chips
-1/2 Cup of chopped and roasted almond slivers
- Line the gram crackers on a slightly buttered 9 by 13-inch baking tray and preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Melt butter in a saucepan and add in brown sugar. Thoroughly mix together with a whisk until it comes to a boil. The mixture should have constant large bubbles forming on top. Boil for 4 minutes while mixing occasionally.
- Pour the toffee mixture onto the gram crackers in an even layer. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until it is very bubbly across the entire dish. Let it rest outside for about 30 seconds until the bubbles subside.
- Gently sprinkle the chocolate chips evenly across the entire dish and wait 5 minutes until they have melted. Spread the chocolate across in a think layer taking care not to penetrate the toffee layer.
- Toss the almonds onto the still melted chocolate layer and set in the fridge for at least an hour before cutting up and serving. Store in the fridge.
